Fireplace Designs…

It’s been a year since GHID has been working from the Pratt & Larson warehouse facility, just above the slab room in the lofts above. It’s been amazing calling 1204 SE Water Avenue our home away from home for the past year, and we’re looking forward to many more years to come.

Our location is perfect for the type of work we do as it’s located just down the street from various industry resources, including the Pratt & Larson showroom.

We’ve had the privilege of touring the P&L backrooms and production lines (all of which have been fascinating) – but I have to say; the main level of their showroom has to be our favorite part…

We love beautiful things, more specifically we love beautiful product we can use to create beautiful work.

Here are a few fireplace designs that utilize gorgeous tiles, most of which are available at P&L of Portland.

Bathroom Accessories…

We just received our copy of Elle Decor last week and as always the November publication is incredibly insightful, intuitive and very entertaining to say the least.

We often pull inspiration from their publication, being that much of what they include – projects, products and well-written articles (many of which have made it onto our inspiration boards) – tend to resonate with GHID.

One of the articles that stood out to me this time around was a feature entitled “Insider Sources: Bathroom Accessories“. Being that I’m just about to begin sourcing items for a client’s entry bath, I was intrigued to read up on a few new sources other design professionals would recommend…

Powder Room – Before:

*Pardon the horrendous photography…courtesy of the mobile phone.

We’ve already wallpapered the space, and purchased a trash can (pictured below), now it’s time to complete the look…

Here are a few items from the list of resources Elle included in their feature…

1. Paul Farrell ‘Beach Combe’ Print, Rocket St. George 2. Mother of Pearl Knob, Anthropologie 3. Well-Versed Towels – Chartreuse, Anthropologie 4. Zig-Zag Bath Mat, West Elm 5. Horn Bathroom Accessories, Rockett St. George 6. Keihls, Bergdorf Goodman

These new additions are exactly what this powder bath needs. I’m loving what I’ve found thus far – in fact, I may have to send this off to the clients for approval! We’ll see what they think!

Hopefully a few of these items make it into the after pics!

Silver & Gold, Mixing Metals

A signature GHID way to mix in a bit of fun and glamour into a room is to add a touch of metallic. Mixing metals in a space gives dimension and interest without looking uniform and “matchy.” This can easily be accomplished through adding simple accessories as finishing touches, or creating beautiful luxurious walls (even in a bathroom {above}, Striking!) adding just the right touch and mixture of silver & gold glam into the space.

Found some very glamorous fabrics that can be added a room for a little icing.

Left to Right: 1. F. Schumacher 2. Tony Duquette for Jim Thompson 3. Stroheim

We recently finished up the first phase of one of our dear clients located in the Pearl district of Portland. Our beginning palette was a beautiful modern loft space with gorgeous view of the city and waterfront. Here we were able to play up the use of mixed metals in the space by introducing new pieces while reawakening some of the clients family heirlooms with a new metallic finish. Here is the layout plus a few amateur iPhone pics.

Using variations of metals from polished gold or silver leafing can add great dimension to a small space.

Professional shots to come, can’t wait to show you!

Lastly, I’d like to leave you with a few images from the set of “Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day” for that true gilded take on classic interiors. If you haven’t seen it yet, I just made you some great weekend plans. This was GHID‘s primary inspiration for the whimsy dining room set in October’s Serving Up Style. Yummy!

Menswear Inspired Design For A Bachelor Pad – The Reveal…

Remember our menswear inspired design blog we posted a few months ago? And remember how we said that there would be “pics to come” – the day has arrived dear friends…pics are in!

Here are a few before pics to jog that memory of yours:

A few after pics (professional ones to come):

Swivel chairs in front of the floor to ceiling windows:

Gorgeous fabrics grounded the room, and gave it the life it so desperately needed:

The cognac leather provided that oh so important English pub statement…

The orchid, a GHID signature, added a touch of whimsy and balanced out the more structured, tailored lines within the furniture frames and masculine textiles:

The cocktail table (pictured below) added textural interest and a touch of sophistication…

Accessory selection was very important for this man-pad as we selected more crisp, masculine silhouettes along with a few bar-type items to complete our menswear inspired bachelor pad…

A little greenery softens the space…

Another amazing bachelor pad…

Who doesn’t love his music? Who doesn’t love his Manhattan loft (if you call a 2,500 square foot space a loft)…

Let’s ooooo and ahhhhh at John Mayer’s private residence together shall we, featured in Elle Decor:

Love the rocker touches and minimalist style – better yet the Jimmy Hendricks sketch…

Happy Tuesday!

Interior Design Seminar featuring Garrison Hullinger Interior Design…

We talk an awful lot about design trends and ways to improve your home here on our GHID blog (designer secrets if you will) – which is most likely the reason you’ve stumbled subscribed to our blog. That and, if you’re the curious type – much like myself – you’re interested in what we’re up to, what we think about specific design trends or just want to see the various perspectives on the way others live – you may want to get a group of friends together for an afternoon pertaining to all things design. Allow me to extend an invitation to you…

As you may or may not know, Garrison Hullinger was recently asked by Portland Monthly to speak at a Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams designer event (*we blogged about that particular engagement a few weeks ago – click here). This opportunity, along with the many others Garrison has been presented with over the past few years, is an incredibly flattering, exciting and important aspect of our design philosophy. These events present us the opportunity to introduce ourselves to those in need of design services (could that be you?), meet fellow design gurus (are you a design guru?) and associate ourselves with fellow design peers (you know who you are – or we hope to meet you!).

Today I’m pleased to announce that Garrison will be speaking at Portland’s own National Builders Hardware this coming Saturday November 5th at 11:15am.
