I feel so blessed to be able to live and work in the Pacific NW, and even more blessed to be a part of such a lively city such as Portland, Or. Recently, GHID was referred a client who lives in the heart of the Pearl District of Portland (OooLaLa). Living in a single bedroom loft isn’t always the easiest when it come to space planning. The client, a hard-working single woman, was having a difficult time defining her different rooms with such an open area, which is very common in loft living. The client knew she wanted a home to entertain and cook with ease, while warming up the industrial feel of the modern vaulted-ceiling loft space.
With a breath-taking view of the Freemont Bridge (above) right outside her window and a clean slate to work with, GHID was inspired by not only the city setting but by the client’s bright personality and fun-loving spirit. And so it began…
We were able to separate the open living area by defining the spaces with mindful placement of key furniture pieces. For example, we filled the living area with ample seating & created an inviting space to draw the eye toward the back of the room when first entering the loft. A sofa with a chaise lounge or sectional is a great way to add seating in a tight space. By placing counter height islands directly off the kitchen area, it not only defines the kitchen area but also adds counter and additional seating space, great for entertaining. We placed a large bookshelf to create a more private desk area while adding more space for storage (who doesn’t need more storage space?)
In the bedroom we wanted to continue the look of her living room, but soften it up a bit with an upholstered headboard/frame and more calming colors. Again wanting to add more storage, we chose furniture pieces with drawers instead of shelves and even added a tall armoire. Both nightstand and armoire have vintage mirrored fronts to add the illusion of more room in a small space, an easy space-saving trick.
Here are some shots of the finished Living Room, more shots of the finished product to come, so stay tuned in the next coming months. Cant wait!
Happy Wednesday, and HAPPY THANKSGIVING to all. I hope everyone gets a chance to relax and cozy up during this holiday weekend! Happy Eating!
